Origin presumably Dutch, possibly from a seedling, brought to the market under this name (from the French "campagne".)The apple is known to be a long existing variety.

 

SHAPE: as illustrated; always a bit lopsided.

SIZE: third grade.

EYE: small, mostly closed, narrow sepals, greyish green, medium basin surrounded by low ribs.

STALK: always very short, mostly fleshy, in beautiful, rather broad and shallow cavity, in which one sees a little raylike russeting mixed with some light dirty green

The COLOUR of the sun side of many apples is more livelier and more dark red ; russeting is rare; many large greyish white lenticels

The FLESH is medium firm, not very fine, juicy, sweet mixed with a little tartness

TIME OF USE: December - March. Second grade for the kitchen.

The TREE is a good grower, forms a dense crown, very fertile even on peaty soil; recommended as standard tree; popular in coastal areas, especially the province of Zeeland
