RUSSISCHE PIPPELING.
ippeling, Russische (Beschrijving der vruchtsoorten [Description of fruit varieties], first series, N°. 65).
Its origin is no longer known; the variety is being grown from time immemorial; up till now we did not receive this variety from abroad.
SHAPE: unvariable.
SIZE: fourth grade.
EYE: closed, seldom half closed; short sepals in an attractive, regular, shallow basin.
STALK: usually longer and less fleshy than in our reproduction, woody, in a narrow, shallow cavity, with seldom any russeting.
The COLOUR of the thin, smooth and shiny skin is golden yellow, at the sun side covered by orange-red, displaying some yellow lenticels in brown-red circles; few lenticels visible at the shadow side, light grey.
The FLESH is snow-white, fine, rather firm, juicy, sourish; pips are small, black-brown, the core is medium sized.
TIME OF USE: December - February; first grade for dessert.
The TREE can be grown in any shape and is very fertile; summer twigs are thin, light brown, with fine lenticels and covered with silvery wool; buds are flat and the flowers are rather large, almost white.
