Reinette Ananas    (Beschrijving der vruchtsoorten [Description of fruit varieties], second series, N°. 130).

This apple is presumed to be of Dutch origin.

SHAPE: very regular, usually a bit lopsided.

SIZE: fourth grade.

EYE: closed, sometimes half-closed; narrow, shallow basin with a little thin russeting and some folds.

STALK: short, rather thin, woody; cavity is narrow, shallow, regular, with a ray-like russeting

The COLOUR varies between a dark lemon-yellow and a golden yellow (sun-exposed apples) but no red. The skin is smooth and shiny; starry lenticels spread evenly, brown at the sun side, greenish at the shadow side, and some thin greenish russeting.

The FLESH is yellowish white, fine, juicy, very aromatic, reminding of pine-apple. Medium sized core with rather big, brown pips.

TIME OF USE: December - February; first grade for dessert, comes strongly recommended, valued as a market fruit.

The very characteristic TREE is a moderate grower and very fertile; twigs are thick, blunt, pale olive-brown, with few fine, pale lenticels; buds are close together, thick and a bit woolly; leaf stalks are thick, about 26 mms long; the leaves are rather big, broad and oval, a bit bent upwards, lightly but regularly serrated, shoots are woolly. Its moderate but steady growth makes the variety suitable for all shapes.
