old-Apfel von Kew    (Handbuch, I, page 295).

According to the Handbuch its origin would be England; we can not find, however, any reference to this variety among the English authors we consulted; we received the apple from Mr. oberdieck.

SHAPE: as in our illustration, sometimes a bit flatter near the eye.

SIZE: third or fourth grade.

EYE: half closed, rather long, usually green sepals, woolly; in a small, shallow basin surrounded by small, flat ribs.

STALK: 20 mms, green with brown, woody, a bit woolly, in a narrow cavity with a thin, grey-green russeting.

The COLOUR is light yellow with some green, at the sun side more golden yellow, no red, with grey-green lenticels. The skin is thin, smooth, very fine.

The FLESH is creamy white, rather fine, soft, juicy, sourish, little aroma. The core is medium sized, surrounded by yellow veins, with medium cells and attractive brown pips.

TIME OF USE: October and November; second grade for the kitchen.

The TREE is a moderate grower, builds a good crown and bears mildly; the twigs are strong, of medium length, violet with olive-grey, with small, round lenticels; buds are flat; the shoots are rather long and firm; leaf stalks are 30 - 40 mms long, a little grooved; the leaves are large, broad, coarsely veined, dully serrated.

Probably a good market apple among the early fall varieties. Best recommended as a standard tree.
