Couronne des pommes.

Reinette von Welten.

Rosenapfel von Welten.

The Handbuch mentions this variety to be cultivated by Mr. jansen from Welten, a village at three hours from Aachen (Germany); it was sent to us by Mr. OBERDIECK.

SHAPE: usually the apple is not so high as in our illustration; the Handbuch shows it considerably smaller and rounder; we also noticed more flat-round apples.

SIZE: third grade.

EYE: half closed, with grey-black, pointed sepals, surrounded by green, in a shallow, thinly russeted basin, larger and smaller ribs spreading from the basin over the greater part of the apple, making a cross-section of the fruit look angular.

STALK: 10 - 15 mms, can both be woody or fleshy, in a narrow, irregular cavity with very little russeting.

The COLOUR can be even darker yellow than in our illustration; many small, brown-green lenticels in a yellow circle, often showing black-grey rain spots. The skin is smooth, not waxy, rather thick.

The FLESH is cream-coloured, rather fine, soft, juicy, sweetish sour, somewhat aromatic, not excellent, in our judgement. The core is medium sized, open, with medium cells and coffee-brown pointed pips.

TIME OF USE: November - January; second grade for dessert and kitchen.

The TREE is a moderate grower and very fertile. The twigs are thin, slender, brown with olive, with a silvery shine and almost round lenticels; the buds are broad, flat; the shoots are thin, brown with olive, woolly; leaf stalks are 15 - 20 mms; the leaves are medium sized, heart-shaped; deeply and sharply serrated, with a long and pointed tip.

To be used as a pyramid. Although a goodlooking apple, we can not recommend it in a general way.
