Burchardt's Goldreinette.

The variety was grown by Mr. von hartwiss from Nikita and named after Mr. Burchardt, pomologist in Landsberg on the river Warthe. We received the variety from Mr. oberdieck.

SHAPE: as illustrated; the Handbuch shows it more flat-round.

SIZE: fourth grade, under favourable circumstances and heavy soil possibly third grade.

EYE: open, with long, pointed sepals, in a rather deep, thinly russeted basin, surrounded by broad, flat rises.

STALK: 25 - 30 mms long, woody, seldom fleshy, rather strong, in a rather wide and deep cavity, covered with a green-grey, ray-shaped russeting.

The COLOUR is green-yellow, often with a thin white bloom; when ripe, as illustrated, the apple shows a beautiful thin network of cinnamon-coloured russeting, reminding of hieroglyphes.

The FLESH is white, with green-yellow veins, fine, rather firm, sourish, savoury. The core is medium, as are the cells; attractive coffee-brown pips.

TIME OF USE: October - December; second grade for dessert; we feel there are far better varieties.

The TREE grows well, builds an attractive pyramid crown and is very fertile. The twigs are slender, olive-grey, with a silvery shine and round, white lenticels; the buds are snub and conical, standing off; the shoots are long, thin, olive-grey, woolly; the leaf stalks are 15 - 25 mms, thin; the leaves are egg-shaped, medium sized; nice, regular, dull serrating. We can not recommend this variety in a general way, there are so many better apples.
