Abstract

Brazil is rapidly becoming a major player in the world beef market. The Brascan Company is trying to capture more value in the beef business in order to enhance its investments. Opportunities are available for extending agro-food chains and networks that could contribute to this development. Two major strategies are discussed: (1) to become a large and reliable supplier in a beef chain, Brascan needs to grow horizontally; (2) to capture added value, Brascan needs to improve coordination in the vertical direction of the supply chain. The company is currently identifying strategies that could be helpful to achieve these aims.
