Abstract

The application of Fe, Cu or Zn at 20 mu g g-1 soil to eight Spanish soils resulted in 7-20% inhibition of urease activity. The inhibitory effect was most pronounced in light-textured soils, and Cu was the most effective metal. These elements did not inhibit microbial production of urease in two soils. Cu, but not Zn and Fe, markedly retarded urea hydrolysis and reduced the loss of urea-N by ammonia volatilisation in a loamy sand. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)
