[116.17.012:145.911].Available N in a flooded soil under rice was assessed by measuring N uptake by the plants. During flooding the supply of NH4 was unchanged but NO3 rapidly denitrified. When applied to a dry soil NH4 was nitrified but flooding caused the denitrification of NO3 to occur and the supply of N was roughly halved. A change in soil pH towards acidity (to pH 4.5) was sufficient to check nitrification and the loss of N from NH4 applied before flooding.
