Abstract

Recent material was in prolonged and intensive contact with fresh lake water whereas in older sediments cation exchange was still affected slightly by the former marine medium. Under fresh lake water, adsorbed Mg, K and Na are exchanged for Ca. This may also explain the lower content of S compounds; S compounds are oxidized into SO4 in the young material, which is rich in oxygen and bacterially active, and are then removed by percolating water. Moreover fewer new insoluble compounds are formed in fresh water than in SO4-rich seawater. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)
