Abstract

The sulphonate components of detergents have a harmful effect on most horticultural crops, probably because they disturb the water balance in the soil. When the soil contains sufficient absorbing material (clay or humus), the harmful effect is reduced. The adverse effects of increasing concentrations of sulphonates on spinach are described in detail. Other crops adversely affected were endive, tomatoes, cauliflowers, french beans, carrots, lettuces and cyclamen.-Hort. adv. Serv., Wageningen.
