NONPAREIL SCARLET.
ew Scarlet nonpareil (Catalogue of the Fruits, N°. 482).
See: Beschrijving der vruchtsoorten [Description of fruit varieties]; first series, N°. 117.
English origin.
SHAPE: no variations
SIZE: fourth grade
EYE: half-open most of the time, short sepals
STALK: long (in proportion to the apple), woody, bent
The COLOUR of apples exposed to the sun is a lively brownish red with yellow/grey lenticels.
The FLESH is pleasant, soft, aromatic, sweetly sour, not unlike the famous "Wijker-pippeling".
TIME OF USE: December - March. First grade as a dessert apple.
The TREE is a moderate grower, best suited for pyramids and espaliers. As a standard tree it needs a sheltered place. This variety is very fertile; apples often grow in clusters; in that case the apple in the middle has always a shorter stalk, most of the time fleshy.
