BRIELSCHE CALVLLLE.
alville, Brielsche (Beschrijving der vruchtsoorten [Description of fruit varieties], second series, N°. 105).
The variety originates on the island of Voorne, and is very popular around Brielle (province of Zuid Holland); marketed under the above name by Boskoop arborists.
SHAPE: usually much less ribbed than the witte Winter-Calville (N°. 14), although sometimes stronger.
SIZE: third grade.
EYE: closed, small and pointed sepals; narrow basin, surrounded by ribs which cover the entire apple.
STALK: short, mostly fleshy, green with brown, woolly; narrow cavity, seldom with a thin, green russeting.
The COLOUR of the apple on the tree is more yellow-green than the witte Winter-Calville.
The FLESH is white with yellowish veins, rather fine, soft, rather juicy, not very sour, no aroma; the medium sized core contains small, usually imperfect pips.
TIME OF USE: December - February. Recommendable for the kitchen but not as a dessert apple.
The TREE is a strong grower, forms a solid crown, fertile already at young age. Summer twigs are strong, violet-brown, with many perceptible grey lenticels; buds are flat, flowers medium, leaves egg-shaped. Suitable as a standard tree with crown; the variety will do well on the market and is less vulnerable than the witte Winter-Calville, which of course is a far better apple.
